What started as a log tavern constructed under a huge hickory tree in the 1850s has blossomed into a bustling town where history and modern amenities perfectly converge. Known for the “Miracle of Hickory” after World War II when the community came together to build a hospital to care for polio-stricken children in less than 54 hours, that sense of community lives on in its shops, restaurants, and local colleges and universities.
